Virtually, everything that I experienced - the plane ride, the zip line, the rock climbing, the snorkeling, everything in and about Palawan - in our trip was a first for me. And all firsts surely stick in our memories, don't they? These things are gonna for sho. More so, some of the foods that I've tasted in Palawan for the first time would definitely make it to the list of "Most Memorable's" in my life.
Nikki did a great job in doing her homework. Oh, not my daughter Nikki. My friend-slash-officemate Nikki who planned our Palawan trip. She did great on the research especially the must-taste foods there. In-avail namin lahat 'yun. So among the many firsts I've experienced on this trip is the chance to try these foods for the first ime.
1. Tamilok or Shipworm. I think this deserves to be in the number one spot. I wasn't totally engrossed by this food. I just thought of it like the street food isaw sans the food color and the stick. I honestly couldn't figure what it tasted like. My friends were saying it tasted like oyster. Um-agree na lang ako. Isa lang masasabi ko, makunat siya. Nguya-nguyain mo pa ng 100 times then lunok.
2. Sea Urchin. I saw Kris Aquino on TV when she was in Palawan and she tried the sea urchin. I got curious how it tasted. I was already in Palawan, so why not! Sa laki ng bao ng sea urchin na 'yan, super konti lang pala ng laman. For P20 a piece, keri na basta ma-try lang.
3. Chao Long. If Batangas has Chame, Palawan has Chao Long. I'm not sure if I spelled the name right. Something like that. Sounds like naman e. It's like mami with different flavors to choose from. What made my chao long experience different was the fresh basil leaves. The basil leaves were served separately from the bowl of chao long. Pitas-pitasin mo pa ang basil leaves then ihalo sa chao long then lafs!
4. Noki Nocs Halo-halo. Nikki learned, again from blogs, that Noki Nocs Halo-halo was really masarap. I guess it's like Palawan's version of Razon's Halo-halo. In fair, masarap naman talaga siya. Crushed ice pa lang, winner na! (Pero sorry Noki Nocs, Razon's pa rin ako.)
5. Chinese Crispy Empanada. While the rest of us were in our own hotel rooms during our last day in Palawan resting and preparing for our afternoon flight, Nikki and Nino sneaked out of their room to locate a store that sold this empanada. Nikki was so delighted to have found one. Ginoogle map pa raw niya 'yun. She brought one back to the hotel for me. Pinanindigan niya ang name niya, it really was crispy. The bread part was really tasty and crispy. The filling was, uhm, keri lang.
6. Crocodile Jerky. The packaging and apperance looked like that of tocino. The taste was like that of the sweet and spicy dilis. I couldn't tell exactly because I only had a teenie weenee bite. I was still engrossed by the idea that I was eating crocodile meat. I don't know why it's named like that. I bought two packs only for P65 per pack. I brought home to Baguio one pack and the other one went with Vian to Nueva Ecija.
7. Shawarma Noodles. I know this one's not exclusive in Palawan but I would still like to add this to my list. I know there's shawarma. And there's also shawarma rice. I've never heard of shawarma noodles until that day I learned about it in Palawan. The shawarma noodles, my friends and my sister and I liked. It was like pancit canton with all the sahog in it and topped with shawarma dressing. Plus, their shawarma rice was not the shawarma rice I'm used to seeing sold here in Baguio. It was like Chowking's Chao Fan topped with shawarma dressing. Basta kakaiba sila, which I think made them desirable and delish.
Ooops, I just remembered. There's one pala that I didn't get the chance to try - crocodile sisig. On Day 4, during our city tour, we were supposed to try that. But Nino was already having stomach trouble. So we dismissed the idea. That's why we settled with the crocodile jerky, even brought home some for pasalubong.
Wala talaga akong pinalampas na pagkain sa Palawan. I tried all of them that must be tried. At least now I know how they taste. Otherwise, I will miserably wonder how they taste until I get the chance again.
